A group of drivers in matching blue t-shirts sits resting on the steps of a small town street. Behind them is the "Wangzhe Department Store" shop, its sign listing various grocery store phone numbers.

This is a 12-car convoy from Malaysia. Everyone is from the same car club. This time they agreed to enter China together through Mohan Port, traveling a classic southwest road trip route.

After driving all morning, everyone is a bit tired, so they stop by the roadside to rest. Some take photos with their phones, some drink water, some chat. The atmosphere is relaxed and lively.

"Where are we going to eat next?" someone asks.

"There's a rice noodle shop up ahead. I heard it's really good. Let's try it," someone answers.

The shop owner stands at the door, smiling at these foreigners—although the language isn't quite right, the smiles on everyone's faces are the same.

Clouds drift overhead. The wind carries the moisture unique to tropical regions. Everyone sits together, chatting and laughing, like old friends who've known each other for years.

Actually, this is what road tripping is all about—no matter what country you come from, people you meet on the road are all friends.

Many car clubs organize cross-border road trip activities like this. A dozen cars set off together, a grand procession. Along the way everyone looks after each other, helps each other out. The joy of group driving like this is something you can't experience driving alone.

"This time we brought 12 cars, over 30 people," the convoy captain says. "Everyone is here for the first time, and everyone's really excited."

Indeed, China is so big, the scenery is so beautiful, the food is so delicious—who wouldn't want to come see?
