What is a Temporary Driving Permit?
Foreigners with a valid foreign driver license, during short-term stay in China, can apply for a Temporary Driving Permit at the local vehicle management office. This is the legal document for you to drive in China. Without it, you cannot drive on the road.
According to Ministry of Public Security regulations, short-term visitors can apply for a 3-month permit; those staying longer than 3 months can extend it up to 1 year.
DIY Process (If You Apply Yourself)
- Prepare documents: passport, visa, foreign license, translation, photos, medical check
- Go to the vehicle management office and queue
- Fill out application form and submit documents
- Attend traffic safety law study (half to full day)
- After passing, wait for approval (usually 3-5 working days)
