The Mohan (China)Boten (Laos) border crossing is the most popular entry point for foreign vehicles coming from Southeast Asia. Here's the full process, from preparation to driving away.
Before You Arrive (1–2 Weeks Prior)
Step 1: Submit Documents to Your Agency
Send copies of your passport, vehicle registration, driving license, and travel itinerary. We prepare the temporary import permit application and customs guarantee in advance.
Step 2: Pay the Symbolic Deposit
Transfer ¥10,000 RMB to our corporate bank account. This is fully refunded when you exit China with your vehicle.
Step 3: Receive Pre-Approval
We send you a confirmation letter and your border clearance package. We tell you exactly what time to arrive and where to meet our staff.
At the Border (Day of Arrival)
Step 4: Exit Laos (Boten Side)
Drive to the Lao border post. Complete vehicle exit procedures on the Laos side. This usually takes 30–60 minutes.
Step 5: Meet Our Staff at Mohan
Our representative meets you at the China side of the border. We handle customs inspection, document verification, and temporary license issuance on your behalf.
Step 6: Vehicle Inspection
Customs officers inspect your vehicle (VIN check, odometer reading, photos). Our staff guides you through each counter.
Step 7: Receive Temporary License & Insurance
You receive the Chinese temporary vehicle license plate and proof of mandatory insurance. Total time at border: 2–4 hours.
After Clearing Customs
Step 8: Drive Into Yunnan
You're now legally driving in China. Your first destination is typically Xishuangbanna (Jinghong), about 2 hours from the border.

Important: Do not arrive at Mohan without a pre-approved temporary import permit. Without our agency pre-clearing your paperwork, customs will not allow your vehicle to enter.
Exit Process (When You Leave China)
When you're ready to exit, we handle the de-registration process. Your vehicle is inspected at the border, the temporary license is surrendered, and your ¥10,000 deposit is refunded within 7–14 working days.
