China Temporary Driving Permit · Fast-track Service · Same Day
Short answer: Yes, you absolutely can. Right-hand drive vehicles from Malaysia are legally allowed to enter China temporarily via Mohan Port (Yunnan), as long as you go through the licensed travel agency declaration process. We have processed dozens of Malaysian RHD car and motorcycle groups through this port.
China is a left-hand drive (LHD) market — all domestic cars are built for drivers sitting on the left side of the vehicle. However, the Interim Provisions on the Administration of Temporarily Entering Motor Vehicles and Drivers (Ministry of Public Security Order No. 90, revised 2021) explicitly allows foreign right-hand drive vehicles to enter China for temporary tourism purposes.
This rule applies to all temporary entry vehicles, not just those from Malaysia. British, Australian, Japanese, Singaporean, New Zealand, and of course Malaysian RHD cars all qualify — there is no blanket ban on RHD vehicles entering China as long as they meet safety and insurance requirements, and are processed through the official temporary entry channel.
What you cannot do is permanently register or sell an RHD car in China. Temporary entry means the car must leave China within the approved period, exactly like LHD foreign cars. You also cannot permanently modify the car while it is in China — normal wear and tear from driving is fine, but major engine swaps or structural changes are not allowed.
For Malaysian drivers planning an overland trip to China, Mohan Port (on the China-Laos border) is by far the most common and well-established entry point. The driving route from Kuala Lumpur works like this, following the famous Kunming-Bangkok highway corridor:
The total drive from KL to Mohan is roughly 2,800 km, taking about 5–6 days with comfortable overnight stops. This route is extremely well-traveled by Malaysian overland groups, and road conditions along the way are generally good — the entire stretch from Bangkok to Mohan is now paved highway, with only small sections in northern Laos having winding mountain roads.
Other options — like entering via Guangzhou by sea shipping — are much more expensive (shipping a car from Port Klang to Guangzhou costs roughly USD 1,500–2,000 each way) and take 2–3 weeks. For a road trip starting in Malaysia, driving through Thailand and Laos into Yunnan is the natural, scenic, and cost-effective route.
Your Malaysian-registered RHD car must meet these basic requirements before it can be approved for temporary entry:
Malaysian RHD cars do not need to be converted to LHD before entry. You do not need to add extra warning mirrors or "RHD" signs on the back — the temporary entry approval covers RHD operation on Chinese roads, and traffic police are used to seeing RHD cars from Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand entering via Mohan.

For your car:
Important: You cannot do this process on your own. All foreign self-drive vehicles entering China must be declared by a licensed travel agency — this is a hard requirement from both customs and the traffic police, per the 2025 Kunming city notice on non-commercial vehicle management at Mohan Port. We handle every step of the declaration, so you do not need to visit any government office in person, and the entire border crossing process takes about 2–3 hours.
Most Malaysian drivers adjust to Chinese roads within a day or two. A few practical things to keep in mind:
Our service package for Malaysian RHD entry includes the full customs declaration, temporary Chinese license plates, temporary driving permit processing, and the mandatory China temporary motor vehicle insurance. The total cost is transparent, with no hidden fees. Your car is approved for up to 6 months in China, with the option to extend for up to 3 additional 6-month periods if you need more time.
You can exit through any Chinese port — many Malaysian groups enter via Mohan, drive north to Chengdu, Xi'an, and Beijing, then exit via Khorgos (Xinjiang) to continue into Central Asia, or drive all the way to Guangzhou and ship the car home from there.
