Mohan Motorcycle Entry Document Pre-check: Which Papers Get Rejected and Why

If you're riding a motorcycle into China through Mohan, the border crossing itself is rarely the hard part — it's the paperwork beforehand that catches riders out. I've helped a great many bikers from Thailand, Malaysia and Laos through this crossing, and the same handful of document mistakes come up again and again, holding up otherwise good trips. A proper pre-check before you ever reach the border saves all that grief. Let me walk you through what we send in, which papers tend to bounce, and how to make yours pass the first time.

1. The documents you need to prepare

First, here's the full set, which should be ready about twenty days before you travel, and a month ahead if your route runs into Tibet. For the rider, that means your passport, a valid Chinese visa, your driving licence, and a white-background ID-style photo. For the bike, you need the vehicle registration document, the ownership or logbook, the engine number, and photos of the motorcycle from the front, rear and side. If the engine number isn't printed in the logbook, a clear photo of the frame itself fills the gap.

There's one more wrinkle for older bikes. If the motorcycle is over six years old, you also need a valid inspection certificate from your home country, and once in China it will need to pass a further check at the local vehicle office before the temporary plates are issued. Every document apart from the Chinese driving licence needs a Chinese translation, which we arrange for you rather than you chasing a translator.

2. Why papers get sent back

Now to the part riders ask about most. In my experience, the rejections cluster around a few predictable problems. The common one is translations done badly or informally — a homemade translation, a phone screenshot, or a document that doesn't match the original wording will be bounced straight away. The officers need an accurate, properly formatted Chinese version, and a casual effort simply won't do.

The second is photos that don't meet the brief. The white-background rider photo has to be the right size and style, and the bike photos need to show the whole motorcycle clearly, with the licence plate and frame readable. Blurry phone snaps taken in a hurry, or shots with luggage and modifications obscuring the frame, get rejected.

The third is mismatched or unclear identification numbers. If the frame number on the paperwork doesn't match the one stamped on the bike, or the number is rusty, worn, or shows any sign of being altered, ground or re-stamped, that's a serious red flag and can stop entry altogether rather than just delay it. The same applies if the engine has been swapped without the change being officially registered back home.

3. Incomplete or out-of-date paperwork

A surprisingly frequent issue is simply missing items. Riders arrive with a passport and bike documents but forget the white-background photo, or bring a licence that's close to expiry, or overlook the inspection certificate for an older machine. Documents also need to be current for the whole trip, so a visa or registration that runs out midway creates problems.

This is exactly why the twenty-day lead time matters. It gives us room to spot a missing or wrong document and put it right while there's still time, instead of at the border when the clock is against you and the next riding day is already booked.

4. What the pre-check actually involves

When you send your documents to us ahead of travel, we go through each one against the current requirements, checking that names and numbers line up across passport, licence and bike papers, that the photos meet spec, and that translations are prepared correctly. We'll flag anything that risks rejection and tell you precisely what to fix. It's a boring step, I know, but it's the difference between a smooth entry and a frustrating few days at the border.

We also check the things that can get a motorcycle turned away outright, beyond the paperwork — prohibited items in your luggage, and any stickers, flags or printed material touching on China's sovereignty or territorial integrity, which are taken seriously at entry and can mean refusal. Better to know and remove them before you travel. Keep a clean digital copy of every document backed up on your phone as well, so if a paper goes missing on a long ride you can still show what you need while the original is replaced.

5. How this fits the wider entry process

Every motorcycle comes in under the guarantee of a qualified travel agency such as our company, Yunnan Province International Travel Agency (Group) Co., Ltd., because individuals can't declare themselves through customs. The temporary licence plate is valid for 3 months. Vehicle insurance is arranged before entry and paid at the actual cost, including the compulsory traffic cover you need before plates can be issued. For the customs deposit, the owner only pays 10,000 yuan into a corporate account, arriving 3 days before entry, with the full amount refunded within 3 to 5 working days after the vehicle leaves the country. The vehicle inspection fee is around 200 yuan and applies to every bike.

If you're riding in from Thailand or Malaysia, it's worth reading up on the full border process and on how the insurance side works, since both tie straight into these documents. And once you're on the road, the ordinary traffic rules and the right-hand-drive adjustment apply to bikes just as much as cars.

At the end of the day, document trouble is entirely avoidable with a calm pre-check. Get the full set together early, make sure the numbers match and the photos are clear, and let the translations be handled properly. Do that and Mohan is a friendly, well-trodden entry rather than a headache. If you'd like us to pre-check your motorcycle paperwork or plan the whole trip, just get in touch and I'll get you sorted.
