China Temporary Driving Permit · Fast-track Service · Same Day
Short answer: Yes, you can drive your own foreign registered car into China. The process requires a licensed travel agency to handle all customs declaration paperwork, but it is straightforward and we have helped hundreds of foreign drivers do it.
If you have ever wondered whether you can drive your own foreign-registered car into China, the short answer is yes — but the process is not as simple as just showing up at the border. China does not allow private individuals to clear their own vehicles through customs; all temporary vehicle imports must be handled through a licensed travel agency that holds the right to sponsor temporary entry for foreign cars. This guide walks you through the full process from start to finish, based on our experience clearing over 500 foreign vehicles through Mohan and Horgos border crossings.
First, check that your vehicle meets basic requirements: it must be legally registered in your home country, have valid insurance, and be in roadworthy condition. Right-hand drive cars (from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the UK, etc.) are allowed — there is no rule against driving RHD vehicles in China as long as you have the correct temporary registration and insurance. Your car will be issued a temporary Chinese license plate for the duration of your stay, and you are not allowed to sell, transfer, or permanently leave the vehicle in China.
There are two main land border crossings for foreign self-drive vehicles into China:
You cannot just pick any border port — only these two crossings are currently set up to handle temporary private vehicle imports. Other border points do not have the customs procedures in place for self-drive tourists bringing their own cars.
You will need to have all of these documents ready before you reach the border — if anything is missing, you will be turned back and may have to wait several days to re-apply:
This is the part you cannot do on your own. Our licensed agency will pre-file all documents with China Customs, the Immigration Bureau, and the traffic police before you arrive at the border. On the day you cross, we will meet you at the port, process your temporary vehicle import permit, issue your temporary Chinese license plate, and hand you your temporary driving permit. Most drivers are fully cleared in 2–4 hours — you do not need to wait overnight at the border.
Once you are cleared, you can drive your own car almost anywhere in China. You must always carry your passport, temporary license plate, vehicle import permit, and temporary driving permit with you when you drive. The one major exception is Tibet: foreign private vehicles are not allowed to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region without a special travel permit and escorted tour, which is a separate process. Xinjiang, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, and all other provinces are open for you to drive through.
The standard temporary import period is 30 days, which can be extended for up to 90 days total if you need more time. When you are ready to leave, you must exit China with the same vehicle you entered — if you want to ship your car out by sea, we can also help arrange that process for you.
The biggest mistake we see drivers make is showing up at the border without pre-filed paperwork. Many drivers assume they can just walk through customs like they would in Europe or Southeast Asia — this does not work in China. You also cannot drive your car into China without insurance, and you cannot overstay your temporary permit — this leads to heavy fines when you exit.
