Short answer: Your foreign car can stay in China for up to 90 days total — starting from an initial 30-day import period, with two possible 30-day extensions. You cannot keep the car in China permanently.

What is the standard temporary import period?

When you first enter China with your car, customs issues a temporary import permit valid for 30 days from the date of entry. This is the standard period for most tourists doing a self-drive trip through Yunnan, Sichuan, or Guangxi. If you are doing a longer trip — for example driving all the way from Mohan to Xinjiang or Tibet border area — you will need to apply for an extension.

How do extensions work?

You can apply for two 30-day extensions before your initial permit expires, for a maximum total stay of 90 days. We handle all extension paperwork for you — you do not need to visit a customs office or traffic police station in person. You must apply for the extension at least 7 days before your current permit expires; late applications will incur a fine.

Extensions are not granted beyond 90 days. If you want to stay longer than 90 days with your foreign car, you will need to exit China and re-enter after a cooling-off period — we can arrange this for you as well.

What happens if I overstay?

Overstaying your temporary import period carries a fine of roughly 100 RMB per day, up to a maximum of 5,000 RMB. The fine is paid when you exit China with the car. Overstaying by more than 30 days may result in your car being impounded until the case is resolved, so it is important to keep track of your permit expiry date.

Can I exit through a different port than I entered?

Yes, you do not need to exit through the same port you entered. Many drivers enter via Mohan (Yunnan) and exit via Horgos (Xinjiang) after driving across the country, or vice versa. We will file the appropriate exit paperwork for whichever port you plan to leave from.
