Every year, hundreds of foreign drivers bring their own cars, motorcycles, and motorhomes into China, embarking on epic overland adventures. But the policy landscape changes frequently — ports open and close, fee standards adjust, document requirements tighten — and it's easy to get outdated information online.
As a specialized travel agency handling foreign vehicle temporary imports, we deal with customs, immigration, and vehicle management authorities every single day. In this guide, we compile everything we know about the 2026 policy for driving your own car into China — ports, fees, deposit, documents, and restrictions.
1. Which Ports Can I Use?
Foreign vehicles can't just cross at any border point — they must enter through ports authorized for temporary vehicle imports.
Land Border Ports (4)
- Mohan Port (Yunnan) — border with Laos, the most popular route for drivers from Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Malaysia)
- Khorgos Port (Xinjiang) — border with Kazakhstan, the main entry for Central Asia, Russia, and Europe
- Kyirong Port (Xizang/Tibet) — border with Nepal, popular for Himalayan overlanders
- Erenhot Port (Inner Mongolia) — border with Mongolia, for drivers coming from the north
Sea Ports (3)
If you're shipping your car by sea:
- Dalian Port (Liaoning, Northeast China)
- Guangzhou Port (Guangdong, South China)
- Shenzhen Port (Guangdong, South China)
Important note: not all border crossings support foreign vehicle temporary imports. Many smaller border points are for local residents only — don't just drive up to a random border and expect to clear your car through.
2. How Much Does It Cost?
This is the question we get most often. Here's the breakdown for 2026:
Service Fees (Per Vehicle)
Our service fee covers customs declaration, immigration processing, temporary driver's license, temporary license plates (valid 3 months), exit customs clearance, route filing, and on-the-ground port assistance.
- Mohan Port entry: 5,000–6,000 RMB per vehicle (Laos-registered vehicles: 4,000 RMB)
- Khorgos Port entry: 6,000–9,000 RMB per vehicle
- Cross-border (Khorgos in / Mohan out, or reverse): 8,000 RMB full package
- Erenhot Port entry: 8,500 RMB per vehicle
- Sea port — Guangzhou: 22,000 RMB per vehicle (excludes sea freight)
- Sea port — Dalian: 18,000 RMB per vehicle (excludes sea freight)
Customs Deposit
This is the part people worry about most. Normally, customs calculates a deposit based on 50–65% of your vehicle's value — for a $50,000 car, that could be $25,000–$30,000.
But here's the good news: with our agency guarantee, you only need to pay 10,000 RMB in deposit. We cover the rest with our company guarantee.
Refund policy: the deposit is fully refunded 3–5 business days after your car exits China, as long as:
- You haven't overstayed your customs declaration period or temporary plate validity
- There are no unpaid traffic violations
- No outstanding fees or customs issues
What's Not Included
The service fee above doesn't cover:
- Customs deposit (10,000 RMB, refundable)
- Vehicle insurance (compulsory traffic insurance + commercial third-party liability — we arrange it for you, you pay at cost)
- Document translation fees
- Vehicle inspection fee (~200 RMB)
- Fuel, tolls, food, accommodation, guide fees on the road
