Want to drive a car with foreign license plates into China? You need to prepare these four documents first:
1. Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. We need the photo page (data page).
2. Vehicle Registration
Also known as the vehicle ownership certificate (green book). Both sides are needed.
3. Driver License
The owner's home country driver license, both front and back. An international driving permit is helpful but not mandatory.
4. Vehicle Registration Certificate
The vehicle's registration document proving ownership.
Important: Foreign vehicles cannot cross the border on their own. They must be declared through a licensed travel agency to customs for temporary import. Missing documents will cause delays at the border. We recommend checking everything off your list before departure.
Many first-time cross-border self-drive travelers realize they're missing documents only when they arrive at the border. Preparing everything in advance can speed up customs clearance by half.
