Customs Guarantee Explained: Why It Matters for Foreign Cars

A customs guarantee lets you temporarily import your vehicle without paying full import duty. Here's how it works.

If you're planning to drive your own car into China, you'll hear the term "customs guarantee" over and over. It's the core of the temporary entry system — and the main reason you need a qualified travel agency to handle your paperwork.

What Is a Customs Guarantee?

When you temporarily bring a vehicle into China, customs needs assurance that the car won't be sold or left permanently in the country. To guarantee this, customs requires a "guarantee" — essentially a deposit or security bond proving you'll drive the car out within the approved period.

Two Ways to Provide the Guarantee

Key difference: Doing it yourself = hundreds of thousands RMB tied up at customs. Through an agency = only ¥10,000 deposit. This is why the vast majority of foreign vehicle owners choose a travel agency.

Which Agencies Are Qualified for Customs Guarantees?

Not every travel agency can do this. Only agencies that meet all of the following conditions have customs guarantee qualifications:

How Long Does the Guarantee Last?

The guarantee for a temporary entry vehicle is usually valid for 90 days. If you need more time, you can apply to customs for an extension before it expires — up to a maximum of 180 days. We help you plan your itinerary so you exit within the valid period.

How Is the Guarantee Released When You Exit?

When you drive out through a designated port, customs verifies that the vehicle has actually left the country, then releases the guarantee. If it was an agency guarantee, customs returns the credit line to the agency, and the agency refunds your ¥10,000 deposit. The whole refund process typically takes 7–14 working days.
